has two kindle versions of this book. Per the sample, this copy is only pictures and has no text. You cannot highlight or copy the words. The other version is a real ebook and you can highlight and copy. Buy the other version. I am.
This was indispensable for my volunteer teaching of 1st year greek at a local prison. It helped me to clarify the subtleties of the area. I learned a lot that I missed, or didn't get in my undergrad r graduate study as a major in NT. I highly recommend it for those interested n this important issue. The author writes for th0se concerned about accurate exegesis, not for those interested in the grammar for grammar's sake. I thank God that I bought it! Like any grammar, it can be boring and a god cure for insomnia. But for me studying to explain these issues to a class. Other Basic Grammars touchon these isues but none are as through as Burton; and may have actually relied on Burton for their info. With this glowing endorsement, you mau wonder why only the 4 stars; and reconsidering it, it probably does deserve 5. However, it's done now. Mine's getting beat up and when it dies, I'll get another. Isnt that the highest endorsement? My recommendation is to purchase this if the moods and tenses need are a concern.
Burton's "Syntax of the Moods and Tenses in NT Greek" originally appeared in 1888. Two subsequent editions came out, the last one appearing in 1900. Although produced more than a century ago, it is still a valuable resource. Needless to say, this is not a complete NT Greek grammar and is not for the introductory student. It is a study of a specific aspect of Greek grammar, namely, the verb in the various forms in which it appears in the Greek of the NT. For those advanced enough to be familiar with the basics of Greek grammar, Burton's book is a treasure trove of information.
It begins with a discussion of the tenses (present indicative, imperfect indicative, aorist indicative, future indicative, perfect indicative, pluperfect, and future perfect) and goes on to discuss the tenses of the dependent moods, followed by a discussion of the tenses of the participle (present, aorist, future, and perfect). It then discusses the four moods (indicative, subjunctive, optative, and imperative), followed by a thorough description of the moods in various clauses. After this comes a description of the infinite and the participle, and lastly, a discussion of the use of negatives with verbs.
This is an essential tool for the serious student of NT Greek.
